Tsunami threat cancelled

The Seismology section (National Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center) said the tsunami threat from the earthquake has passed and there is No further threat.

The Seismology section would like to advise the general public especially coastal dwellers to take precautionary measures in moving back to their respective communities and resuming normal activities.

This will be the final statement issued for this event however the department said they will continue to monitor the process.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the whole of Fiji, especially coastal areas, following a major earthquake in Ecuador.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake which was at a depth of 10 kilometres struck at 11:59am.

In collaboration with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, the Mineral Resources Department’s Seismology Unit has issued the tsunami threat.

A potential tsunami is forecasted with waves below 0.3 metres. The whole of Fiji, especially low-lying dwellers will expect the first wave to arrive in 14.5 hours (Lau Group).

A huge Earthquake has occurred with verified parameters:

• Magnitude/size: 7.7
• Depth: 10km
• Location: Near the coast of Ecuador
• Time: 11:59am
• Forecast wave amplitude: Below 0.3m

We advise all residents on low-lying coastal areas to take necessary precautions and remain watchful.

Please do take note of any changes to wave patterns and keep listening to the radio/media for further updates.

The department said it would continue to closely monitor the situation.
