Roads update: 7 crossings, 4 bridges, and 4 roads remain closed

Seven crossings, four bridges, and four roads are still closed following the widespread flooding after Tropical Disturbance 17F.

In a statement by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rory Garland said some crossings have been washed out whilst some bridges and roads remain closed to all traffic as they are still underwater.

He said the FRA is continuing to closely monitor the road situation.

At the moment floodwaters are receding slowly in some areas.

Mr. Garland is advising motorists to exercise extreme caution and avoid crossing flooded areas.

In a statement issued by FRA outlined the following closed roads:

Korovou:

Bucalevu temporary crossing, Bucalevu Road, Colata Crossing closed, Colata Cocoa Road.

Levuka:
Toki Bridge temporary bypass, Ovalau Circular Road.

Naqali :
Waima crossing, Nairukuruku Road.

Taunovo:
Tubarua crossing, temporary culvert crossing, Beqa Road.

Northern Division:

Natua: Nabouwalu Road, Tabia- one lane open.

Labasa:
Navakuru Bridge, Nakorotari, Wavuwavu Bailey Bridge, Vunivutu Road

Taveuni:
Qali, North Coastal Road

Savusavu:
Devo Bridge, Koroivonu Bridge, Napuka, Nakarabo, Waivula near Vitina, Natewa West Coast
Vatuvanai, Natewa West Coast.

Western Division

Rakiraki:
Burelevu Crossing, Burelevu, Navuniyaumunu Low Level Crossing, Navuniyaumunu Road
Crossing, Katudaru Road, Qalau Flat, Waimari Road.

A number of roads that were closed have reopened as water levels continue to recede following widespread flooding due to Topical Disturbance 17F over the weekend.

Fiji Roads Authority’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Rory Garland said FRA’s contractors are clearing debris.

Our contractors are making really good progress, they have been clearing debris, reinstating, removing landslides and so forth.

While some places are still flooded we are waiting for floodwaters to recede before our contractors start with the inspection.

Mr. Garland has urged motorists to avoid driving through floodwater as the depth is hard to gauge.

Central Division

Korovou

Bucalevu temporary crossing, Bucalevu Road, Colata Crossing closed, Colata Cocoa Road

Levuka

Toki Bridge temporary bypass, Ovalau Circular Road.

Naqali
Waima crossing, Nairukuruku Road, Navulokani Road both crossings, Viria Road.

Taunovo
Tubarua crossing, temporary culvert crossing, Beqa Road.

Rewa
Cross culvert, Dawakato Road.

Northern Division

Natua
Nabouwalu Road, Tabia- one lane open.

Labasa
Navakuru Bridge, Nakorotari, Dretilailai Crossing, Bulileka Naduna Crossing, Naduna
Mataniwai Road, Wavuwavu Bailey Bridge, Vunivutu Road.

Savusavu

Near Buca Village, Napuka, Devo Bridge, Koroivonu Bridge, Napuka near Natuvu, Dakuniba Road- open to 4WD, Nakarabo, Waivula near Saqani, Natewa West Coast.

Western Division

Rakiraki
Burelevu Crossing, Burelevu, Navuniyaumunu Low-Level Crossing, Navuniyaumunu Road
Crossing, Katudaru Road, Qalau Flat, Waimari Road.

The Nabouwalu Road in Tabia, Labasa is closed to all traffic until further notice.

Confirming this, Fiji Roads Authority Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rory Garland said there was substantial rain overnight which has opened up a large slip at Nabouwalu Road about half way between Labasa and the Transinsular turn-off.

We have immediately closed the roads and our engineers are currently assessing the situation.

Mr. Garland said a detour has been set up for Nabouwalu Road that diverts traffic around the slip via Tabia Naduri Road.

This detour will remain in place until the slip is secure and remedial works undertaken to create a single lane bypass around the slip.

Mr Garland said the Nabouwalu Road now needs an urgent and detailed investigation from their expert engineers.
